What are LED Bulbs?
LEDs do appear to be bulbs, but in fact are not. LED’s are tiny semiconductors encapsulated in plastic, which protect their components and help focus the light.
Incandescent bulbs create light by use of a filament. When power is applied, the filament glows, generating heat, in turn, producing light.
LEDs are the opposite. LEDs create light though a “cold process”, when power is applied to semiconductors they’re stimulated by the movement of electrons; thus creating photons, the light that is visibly seen by humans.
How do LED's save money on bills?
The LED bulbs require much less wattage than the CFL or Incandescent light bulbs, which is why LED bulbs are more energy-efficient and long lasting than the other types of bulb.
Many LEDs have a rated life of up to 50,000 hours. This is approximately 50 times longer than a typical incandescent, 20-25 times longer than a typical halogen, and 8-10 times longer than a typical CFL. Used 12 hours a day, a 50,000 bulb will last more than 11 years.
